'Ai Pono has more than 35 years of expertise in addressing eating disorders, making it the longest-established program of its kind in Hawaii. Catering to individuals aged 13 and older, ‘Ai Pono provides residential treatment exclusively for women and girls, along with partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programming (IOP) held in-person. The center also offers virtual IOP for residents throughout Hawaii. Nestled on the stunning island of Maui, Hawaii, ‘Ai Pono features a traditional Japanese-style house that fosters a peaceful and serene atmosphere. With vaulted ceilings and an open layout, the facility is bathed in natural light. This picturesque setting allows clients to engage in off-site activities, including visits to local beaches, culturally significant sites like the Iao Valley, the lovely Kula lavender farm, and various shopping areas. The center is conveniently just a short walk from the ocean, and clients often partake in mindful strolls to the beach. The approach at ‘Ai Pono emphasizes the connection between food and eating disorders, employing a holistic method to identify and tackle the underlying causes of these conditions. The program considers harmful eating patterns as symptomatic and addresses concurrent issues that may contribute to the onset and persistence of eating disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and body dysmorphic disorder. The women’s residential program includes psychotherapy sessions three times a week, with daily psychoeducational groups. Family involvement is actively encouraged and facilitated by experienced clinicians as outlined in the treatment plan. Meals and snacks are incorporated into therapeutic groups, with support provided by team members, and tailored to align with each client's dietary requirements. Clients meet weekly with a Registered Dietitian to assess and refine their meal plans and receive nutritional guidance. 'Ai Pono’s virtual IOP accommodates individuals of all genders aged 13 and up, designed to align with the client's recovery journey by offering flexible support options based on their progress. The center presents a range of therapeutic techniques, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and internal family systems (IFS), along with trauma-informed care, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and somatic therapy. Furthermore, holistic treatments such as gentle yoga, mindfulness practices, sound therapy, and nature therapy are provided, aiming to create a comprehensive healing experience for both the mind and body.'
At this center, individuals struggling with eating disorders can receive comprehensive treatment. The program focuses on managing symptoms, developing effective coping strategies, and improving overall physical well-being, all under the guidance of experienced professionals.
