In 2014, John Volken Academy was honored with the Dalai Lama Humanitarian Award for its impactful and life-changing approach to addiction treatment. The center offers personalized care in three residential facilities, with the Ranch Academy in the Phoenix area specifically aimed at adults aged 19-44 who are dealing with substance use disorders and co-existing mental health challenges. The program spans 24 months, centered around a therapeutic community model. Nestled on 40 acres featuring breathtaking mountain views, flourishing gardens, and a variety of farm animals, including over 100 horses, the center provides a peaceful, nature-filled atmosphere that fosters healing for its clients, referred to as students. The academy adopts a therapeutic community strategy that melds various evidence-based approaches with training in vocational and life skills. This supportive ecosystem allows students to apply their learned skills and tools in a practical context, encouraging them to take on more responsibilities and develop leadership among their peers. Each resident adheres to a well-structured daily routine that encompasses three hours of therapeutic activities in both individualized and group formats five days a week. Additionally, students may engage in educational pursuits or develop vocational skills through work on the farm and in the facility's store. The program emphasizes comprehensive career development, helping students enhance their inherent talents into viable job skills. Students also participate in meal preparation, service, and clean-up, along with various household and outdoor tasks that instill a sense of responsibility. The therapy options are diverse and include adventure outings, recreational activities, physical fitness, and equine therapy, all incorporated into personalized treatment plans. The primary aim of the program is to equip residents with the necessary skills for enduring sobriety over the two-year residential stay. The treatment is divided into four phases: Phase 1 focuses on uncovering the root causes and harmful behaviors associated with substance use through in-depth therapy. Phase 2 is dedicated to brain healing, providing essential environments and therapies crucial for re-establishing optimal brain function. Phase 3 helps clients embrace a healthier lifestyle while reconnecting with their true selves. Finally, Phase 4 prepares students for re-entry support, allowing them to build a strong foundation for a sober life post-treatment. As part of an extensive aftercare and alumni program, transitional services, relapse prevention, and re-entry support are provided. Nearing graduation, students have access to a re-entry support program that connects them with mentors who guide them in acquiring vital skills. These include financial management, resume writing, job applications, and interview preparation to facilitate a smooth transition into independent living. For graduates seeking a gradual adjustment period, John Volken Academy offers affordable transitional housing conveniently located near the campus.
The rehabilitation center focuses on addressing substance use disorders alongside mental health issues. Each treatment plan is tailored to meet the individual needs of clients, ensuring a compassionate approach that promotes overall recovery.
