The Institute of Living (IOL), affiliated with Hartford HealthCare, serves both adolescents and adults in Connecticut who are facing various mental health challenges, such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders that co-occur. Among the anxiety disorders treated at IOL are generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), hoarding disorder, illness anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, school refusal, separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, phobias, as well as hair-pulling and skin-picking disorders. Patients are provided with treatment updates through the MyChart platform, accessible via app or website. IOL offers multiple care paths, including residential, day treatment, intensive outpatient (IOP), and standard outpatient services. Their therapeutic interventions are rooted in evidence-based methods, integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and medication-assisted treatment (MAT), along with various group therapy initiatives. A distinctive feature of IOL is its commitment to combining clinical services, education, and research, given its association with an academic medical center. The Institute employs both specialized groups and general therapy sessions. Among the general offerings are social skills development, anger management, adventure-based counseling, expressive arts, art therapy, and sewing workshops. IOL tailors some services to specific demographics, such as adults aged 55 and older, for whom geropsychiatrists are available to help with age-related issues like sleep disorders and dementia. They also cater to clients with autism, particularly younger individuals, by focusing on independent living skills and social competencies. The young adults services (YAS) program is designed for individuals aged 18-26 to assist in overcoming mental health hurdles and achieving independence. For LGBTQ+ clients in the same age range, IOL offers inclusive care through their right track program, helping to manage stress and stigma while fostering family connections and coping mechanisms. Additionally, expectant and new parents can access support for peripartum mood disorders when they identify potential mental health concerns during their parenting journey. For youth aged 11-14, the teaching our positive side (TOPS) day treatment program facilitates experiential learning to enhance social skills. The main campus of the Institute of Living is conveniently located in downtown Hartford, close to the airport, with an additional facility for the Anxiety Disorders Center situated approximately 40 minutes away in Cheshire. IOL provides patients with estimates for therapy costs and treatment notes through the MyChart system, with self-pay expenses ranging typically from $120 to $360.
